Its a Mazda 2 in Sedan form, so look for issues with those.

It looks better in the flesh than what photos make it to be

any reasons not to get one

It’s a sedan and a subcompact. That combination should be outlawed. As the Mazda 2 is apparently unavailable in the US, get a Fiesta instead.

Fully agree, and then a proper hatchback one and not the sedan:

Which looks ugly as hell from behind.

Agreed. We don’t get the Fiesta sedan, so I forgot about its existence when I wrote my previous reply.

edit: seeing your name I don’t think I need to tell you what’s available here...

Honestly, I really don’t get the hate for the iA. Yeah it’s a sedan but it’s on a really good platform and looks good. If they drive it and want to buy it, why stop them?

The Skyactiv platforms seem to be pretty awesome. Outside of the front and lack of hatch I see no reason not to. I have a 3 so my experience is with the 2.0 engine but under normal driving conditions epa mileage easily. The Eco tires help a lot though.

If they can afford it, I'd recommend stepping up to the 3. More car for the money, more power, only a couple mpg hit vs the iA and it's a lot better looking.

Nothing wrong at it apart from what you’ve said. Just import a set of Mazda2 emblems, headlamps, taillamps, and bumpers then call it a day.

My partner drove one before we bought his Elantra GT a couple weeks ago. The interior was super cheap and plasticky, but that wasn’t a dealbreaker. It was kinda charming in its way, but we got the Elantra for less than the iA we looked at and it’s a much better car in almost every way.

Not entirely true. You CAN get Mazda2 in the US. You do so by going to a Toyota dealership and buying...

...wait for it...

...a Scion iA.

Part of me wishes I was joking. The other part of me reminds that first part that most people who will buy the Scion iA aren’t the type of people who care about the badge (and therefore wouldn’t have visited a Mazda dealership as a result), and Mazda is still building the car and getting paid by Toyota for doing so, thereby keeping Mazda’s coffers full enough to keep cranking out Miatas. So, no foul, I suppose.
